TEN POPULAR FLOWERS FOR MOTHER’S DAY

When Valentine’s Day is behind us, the next big day in the Florists calendar is Mother’s Day.

Flowers are a really popular gift choice for Mother’s Day, so I thought we should look at the meanings behind the flowers so that we can decode all those Mother’s Day messages that will be going out this year. I also talk about the Mother’s Day Flower Workshops we are holding this year, 2023, at The Northern Flower Garden. So, keep scrolling…

WHITE CARNATIONS

Mother’s Day as we know it originated in the US with Anna Jarvis dedicating a day to remember her late mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, who was a prominent campaigner of women’s issues in her day. Anna would give white carnations, which were her mother’s favourite flower to all the other mothers in her congregation in remembrance of her own mother. Carnations remain a firm favourite for Mother’s Day and whilst they symbolise devotion, the white carnation also symbolises pure love.

PINK ROSES

Roses are a really popular flower for all occasions and their symbolism is very much guided by their colour. We all know that red roses symbolise love and passion whilst yellow roses symbolise friendship, but pink roses symbolise gratitude, appreciation and admiration. So, not only is the pink rose a perfect colour for Mother’s Day, but also a meaningful message for mum.

SUNFLOWERS

Sunflowers would be an unusual choice for Mother’s Day and you would have to look hard to find them in April as this is still early for them to be grown in the UK. However, the short stemmed Sunflower symbolises adoration and loyalty and this is so fitting for Mother’s Day. Their vibrance is also a great choice for mums who like brighter colours as an alternative to the more traditional pale pastels.

TULIPS

Tulips are abundant in Spring, when Mother’s Day falls symbolising perfect love. Like roses, they come in so many different colours and these too can have their own meanings. Yellow tulips symbolise joy and happiness, pink tulips symbolise caring affection and white tulips symbolise respect.

FREESIA

This beautifully scented flower is another Mother’s Day favourite and traditionally a spring flower in the UK. Freesias symbolise innocence and trust which can signify the bonds between a mother and child.

ALSTROEMERIA

Alstroemeria, also known as the Peruvian Lily and it comes in all colours except blue and green. It symbolises devotion and friendship which is a beautiful message for your mum.

EUSTOMA

If we want to say thank you to our mums then Eustoma, also known as Lisianthus is the perfect flower as it symbolises appreciation, admiration and gratitude. This pretty, feminine flower will work beautifully in any Mother’s Day arrangement.

GENISTA

Genista is seasonal from January to April and it has a gorgeous fragrance. It comes in white and yellow and it symbolises neatness and humility. I don’t know about you, but neatness is the perfect description of my mum…

RANUNCULUS

Another seasonal gem for Mother’s Day, Ranunculus have paper thin petals, almost resembling the Peony in their abundance. The meaning of the Ranunculus is ‘I am dazzled by your charms’. What a lovely message for your mum.

WAX FLOWER

Wax flower is only available between October and May, but thankfully this covers our Mother’s Day window, as it is such a pretty little flower to design with which comes in pinks and whites. Wax flower symbolises a deep, lasting love which exists between mother and child but also a strength of love that overcomes difficulties throughout life.

IDEAS FOR YOUR MUM

So what are your plans for your mum this Mother’s Day?

Here at The Northern Flower Garden we are approaching things a bit differently this year. We are offering a Mother’s Day Flowers Workshop which could help you out a number of different ways…

💗 In todays busy world, a perfect gift is time. Come to one of our workshops with your mum and spend that precious time together. No distractions, just beautiful flowers in a beautiful venue and time together to talk and just be together. But, this is a gift that gives two ways, because you both get to take home your very own designs to enjoy at home, mum still gets her flowers.

💗 You could come to the workshop to produce your own floral design for your mum. This would be unique, yours and made with love. Our workshops are a fantastic way to meet new people, learn new skills and just spend your time with flowers. Creativity is a great way to relax, to keep you in the present and mindful.

💗 At our Mother’s Day Flower’s Workshops we will have a selection of flowers taken from those discussed above (so you will know what they all mean) and you will be arranging them in a glass vase within a nest of foliage. The design will be finished with ribbon and ready to gift and you will have the vase and skills to repeat this design whenever you want.

We are holding our Mother’s Day Flowers Workshops at two gorgeous National Trust properties: Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn, South Tyneside and Crook Hall Gardens in Durham City. Fabulous venues, worthy of a visit in their own right. For more information on dates and times etc. for 2023, please click below.
